The Science of Meditation (Tuesday lunch)
Dates: 4th – 18th March
3-Week Kadampa Meditation Series
This series will give you an introduction to Buddhist meditation which can also be understood as an inner science.
There are many different styles of meditation practice for us to choose from these days. This particular presentation is Kadampa Buddhism and can be traced back through meditation masters all the way to Buddha Shakyamuni. It is suitable for anyone to practice in their busy daily life.
Week 1: What is Meditation? & How to prepare.
In this class we will explore what meditation is and why it’s an inner science.
Understanding the benefits also helps to motivate us to meditate, also with good preparation we will be able to improve the quality of our meditation.
Through meditating correctly we will gain our own evidence of the benefits which will spur us on to deepen our practice.
Week 2: The Mechanics of Meditation
To meditate correctly, it is quite simple but there are some specific tools we need to learn in order to develop in our practice.
There are two types of meditation; contemplation and placement meditation. During this class we will learn about these two types and how to apply them practically so that we train ourself to find the object of our meditation, for example a mind of love.
Week 3: Meditation in Daily Life
Meditation is not just reserved for the cushion or chair, it is something we aim to integrate in our busy daily life.
In this class we will look at a really important practice called Guarding the Mind, that enables us to protect our little insights gained during formal meditation and protects our mind from slipping into negative habits.

This series is based on the book, How to Transform Your Life (and others) by Venerable Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

Extract from the course book.
“When things go wrong in our life and we encounter difficult situtions, we tend to regard the situation itself as our problem, but in reality whatever problems we experience come from the mind. If we were to respond to difficult situations with a positive mind they would not be problems for us; indeed, we may even come to regard them as challenges or opportunities for growth and development. Problems arise only if we respond to difficulties with a negative state of mind. Therefore, if we want to be happy all the time and to be free from problems, we must develop and maintain a peaceful mind.”
