Bob has been studying and teaching modern Buddhism for over 30 years. His warm nature and wealth of experience are conveyed in his teachings. His ability to present Buddhist teachings that are suitable for everyone is just one of his qualities as a teacher.

This series of classes will be based on the book “How to Understand the Mind” by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

Each week in these classes we will learn about the power of our mind to bring about happiness and how by changing our mind we will be able to maintain positivity and peace in all that we do.

In this series of classes learn how to gain control over your mind and to let go of the unhelpful mental habits of worry, anxiety and negative thinking. Begin to think the thoughts you want to think.

The time-honored practice of mindfulness and concentration helps us to guard our mind and to focus our thoughts in ways that lead to connecting to a deeper place in our mind. One of inner stillness free from the turbulence of incessant and disturbing thoughts.

We often say: My mind, my mind. But if someone were to ask us: What is your mind? We would have no correct answer. This is because we do not understand the nature and function of the mind correctly.’ – Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. How to Understand the Mind offers us deep insight into our mind. It shows us how an understanding of our mind’s nature and functions can be used to improve our lives practically, in our everyday experience. It begins by guiding us to develop and maintain a light, positive mind. It then explains how to recognize and abandon mental states that harm us, and shows us in how to replace them with peaceful beneficial states. The book goes on to describe different types of mind in detail, revealing the depth and profundity of the Buddhist understanding of the mind. The book concludes with a detailed explanation of meditation, which we use for controlling and transforming our mind until we attain a lasting state of joy, independent of external conditions.

Find a class near you

The way in which we present meditation and Buddhism is accessible to everyone. We offer practical advice as well as methods and techniques that can easily be integrated into daily life. We provide a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. When you arrive, a volunteer will register you before the class and direct you to the meditation space. Normally before class some announcements will be made.

Our experienced teachers are male or female, lay or ordained (Buddhist monk or nun). They will begin with an introduction, and guide a breathing meditation to help settle your mind. They will then give a teaching based on the topic of the class, with clear and logical explanations using examples and analogies.

An important characteristic of Modern Buddhism is to present Dharma teachings as personal advice that can be integrated into daily life. The intention of the teachings and guided meditations is to help you develop peaceful, clear and positive states of mind. This will help you develop your own inner wisdom, so that you can solve your daily problems and enjoy a more meaningful life.

Depending on the class, there will be either another guided meditation or a discussion with the opportunity to ask questions and clarify doubts.

All of our activities are run by volunteers, and we are a registered charity. The class and course fees help cover the costs of running the Centre.
